Each semester the Pioniergarage organizes a StartUp Tour within Germany. This time we decided to go to Berlin which is not only the capital of Germany but also one of the hotspots of the StartUp scene in Europe.

Therefore on wednesday last week at 7:30 a.m. 14 pioneers met at the university library of the KIT to start a four-day adventure. After our arrival in Berlin we had a couple of hours to check in at our hostel and to explore the surroundings. We were also accompanied by two students from Hessen, one student from Berlin and one student from Switzerland. At 5 pm we had our first official appointment at a startup which was recently sold for over $ 100 million to google: DailyDeal. While the two founders were on vacation (even CEOs are on vacation sometimes) we were welcomed by Manuel Hinz, director of corporate development. Since Manuel was one of the first employees of the company, he could tell us a lot about the rapid development of the company and the competition with Groupon and Citydeal. As a last point he gave an advice to all of us who are still looking for the right idea: Do an internship at a startup to see what it is like to be part of a young dynamic community. Afterwards the entire group went to the Italian restaurant Due Forni, which is supposedly Oliver Samwer’s favorite pizza place.

On Thursday we had to stick to a tight schedule. In the morning we met with Henrik Berggren the CEO of Readmill. On its homepage the startup describes itself like this: “Readmill is a curious community of readers, sharing and highlighting
the books they love.”. To establish this community Henrik and his developer have built an app for the iPad with which you can tell your friends about your favorite books and highlight the best passages. Henrik, who was born and raised in Sweden, told us about the reasons why he decided to go to Berlin and what gave him the idea for Readmill. He recommended us that we should come to Berlin to found a company because it is the best place in Europe to get in touch with potential investors. Our second meeting of the day was with Benjamin Rohe, the founder and CEO of Make A Startup. Benjamin underlined that his company is not just like a incubator. Whereas classic incubators “only” support startups with their money, network and know-how, Make A Startup plays a more active role. Benjamin works at least one day each week with the founders of the startups. Thus he considers Make A Startup not as an incubator but a “co-entrepreneur”. A couple of blocks away is the headquarter of wimdu. There we met Sebastian Sielmann, head of affiliate. Wimdu is a web portal on which you can offer and rent private residences. Due to the fact that there are several big companies with the same business idea, wimdu puts a lot of effort in to Search Engine Marketing and Optimization. After Sebastian showed us the different departments of the company, Hinrich Dreiling, one of the co-founders, joined us to answer a couple of our questions. A lot of these questions dealt with the fact that Oliver Samwer’s company Rocket Internet invested in to wimdu. A valuable lesson we learned from Hinrich was that we need to hire A-players to keep up the high quality of your startup. Our last meeting of the day was with Kai Hansen, co-founder and CEO of Lieferando. Lieferando is a platform on which you can make orders at delivery services from your city. Kai told us about the beginnings of its company and their personal goals for the future. Nowadays Lieferando has more than 100 employees and is online in several European countries. Because of that it is hard to imagine that he and his two co-founders have founded Lieferando in his living room because they could not afford any office space at that time. Back then the three of them used to ride on their bicycles across Berlin to pitch their business idea to potential customers. Within a couple of months they have generated customers from all over the nation. Kai’s long-term goal is to gain more shares on the German market and expand their businesses in foreign countries.

Our first date on Friday was with Jessica Erickson from 6Wunderkinder. 6Wunderkinder is one of the most hyped startups in Berlin. Their newest product is the Wunderkit, a platform on which you can plan and organize your projects and share this with your friends and fellow people. Jessica told us that they are very proud that the Wunderkit is unique of its kind and that they did not use an existing business idea. Thus 6Wunderkinder has started an anti-copy-cat-campaign along with 13 other startups to point out that you do not have to copy someone’s business idea to be successful with your startup. After this exciting meeting we had a few hours for ourselves. Most of us used this time to drink a coffee at the cafe St. Oberholz which is a hotspot for entrepreneurs. Later on we have been invited to the headquarters of Mister Spex, an online shop for glasses. There we met Björn Sykora, one of the co-founders, and Eva Noll, head of the human resources department. The conversation we had with them was mostly about the storage and distribution of the glasses because this was the first time that we got confronted with a physical product. Björn told us that today most of the packing gets done by student employees. In the beginnings however the three co-founders sometimes had to bring the packages to the post office personally to ensure that they got delivered in time. Despite the circumstance that you can buy almost anything online by now Björn believes that there is still some potential in the e-commerce market. Last but not least we met with Magnus Resch, one of the managing partners from Springstar. Springstar is a global incubator with three investors. Magnus told us that they try to enforce their startups to introduce their products on several markets simultaneously. On this way the startups have the opportunity to scale larger and grow faster. Magnus pointed out that it is very important that more women get involved in the startup scene because you often need a lot of creativity and inspiration. By the time of 6:30 pm we handed over our last “Pioniergarage coffee mug” (the gift anyone got who was willing to spend time with us) and were done with the official part of our startup tour. In the evening hours the group divided itself in to smaller groups to enjoy Berlin’s nightlife. After a healthy breakfast we left Berlin to head back to Karlsruhe.

These four days have been an amazing experience for 14 pioneers and 3 fellow students. On this way we would like to thank all the people we met in Berlin once again to give us the chance to gain more insights in the life of an entrepreneur. Even though this semester’s startup tour just ended, there is already a plan for the next startup tour in May. For the first time in its history the Pioniergarage will cross the borders to Switzerland and meet entrepreneurs in Zurich.

Until then: Stay tuned!!

This is steroids for your idea. Pitch, form your team, work, get feedback from startups, experts and mentors, present what you have achieved in front of about 80 people including experts from all over Europe.

The process is accompanied by coaches, business angels, start-up entrepreneurs and all other participants. You get to know all these people in an informal way, usually standing there with a beer in hand hooking up with your future investors or mentors.

It has been one week now since the Silicon Valley participants arrived back in Germany.

The first change has been made by installing a new model “Pioniergarage build”. Members of the pioniergarage can get togther weekly here and can really build their own startups.

In this weeks tuesday session Daniel was sharing some experiences we made during the silicon valley trip before we welcomed our special guest Andreas Sperber from Gloveler. He introduced us to the business model and gave us useful tips for projectmanagment.

Go on thin ice, pick up speed, fight dirty, polarize on purpose and be relentless in focus! – Sounds like the rules of Fight Club to you? – No this is how to succeed as a start up!
Today entrepreneurs, accelerators and venture capitalists illustrated us specific strategies and scholarships how building up in the next billion dollar company in Germany could work out.

The first stop of the day was at Mozilla where we met Pascal Finette, a former German entrepreneur who is living since many years in the Silicon Valley. The Mozilla Foundation is a Non-Profit Organisation and a relatively small player when it comes to turnover in the Internet. But in 2003 Mozilla managed to build a by far superior web browser compared to the only competitor Microsoft and this was the cornerstone of success.
Superior Products matter. If you can’t add value for the customer there is no need for your product. Empower your community – allow members to become leaders and you will get great input. Use the advantages of startups. The decision making process of big concern is slow. Pick up your speed and fight dirty! Use your flexibility! These are some of the specific advices we got from Pascal. It really was a great session.

Our next stop was 500 Startups, which is an accelerator offering a three to six month program as well as co-working space for startups from all over the world. 50 percent of the Startups in the current program are not from the U.S. Internationality is an important factor for the accelerator, which is why they aggresivly recruit startups from overseas. Not only offering support and a great network, 500 startups invests 50000 Dollars into each company, taking five percent of the shares. We met with Camilo Acosta from PayByGroup and Adam Bonnifield from Spinnakr

At one p.m. we visited talenthouse. Frederick Hermann, an alumni from Karlsruhe, gave us an introduction on his former startup, which he started in Germany, and talenthouse, which he is part of now. 40 employees in four branch offices, the startups has grown wihtin the last years. Talenthouse offers artists of all kinds a plattform to present themselves and helps them to be succesful. Therefore they organize competitions, sponsored by big companies, casting artists for specific jobs. Talenthouse is not focused on the USA and seeks for talents all over the globe.

The German Silicon Valley Accelerator, where we had our next stop, is an accelerator for German Companies entering the American market. Oliver Hanisch and Dirk Kanngiesser told us about his ambitions to form global players in Germany. Young startups, not older than three years can apply for the program, which offers two people of the team the possiblity to come into the Silicon Valley to get to know the atmosphere of this area and prepare for entering this market. The goal is not, to shift the company here, but letting the German startups become international.

At night we hosted a barbecue at Blackbox Mansion, a house where founders and entrpreneurs live. We had invited all the people we met during the week. Unfortunately it rained yesterday so a lot of people we actually invited didn’t show up. Instead people we didn’t know came who had heard that there was party going on at Blackbox Mansion so it became an awesome event nevertheless.

Mark Zuckerberg baby! Unbelievable! The day started off meeting Jeff Clavier from Softtech VC who is one of the top 50 important people in the internet sector. Softtech, a Micro Venture Capitalist, supports freshly founded startups not only with money but also with any kind of support. Jeff explained to us that there are high entry barriers in the European market in consequence of different legacies and languages. This is a chance for European startups because international companies often don’t want to take that extra expanses and work to enter this market.

Around lunchtime we drove to the facebook headquarter near Stanford campus. While waiting in the lobby for our appointment, Mark Zuckerberg passed our group. All of us were totally stunned, not expecting the youngest billionaire in the world to just pass by saying: “hello guys”. Yet, we managed to take a quick photo, as you can see below. A guided tour through the office was officially not allowed. However, Angela Zaeh, a german speaking employee of facebook, answered us some questions about the company and its working environment. For lunch we enjoyed a wonderful buffet in their canteen, eating great food while having a chat with Angela.

Afterwards we drove off to San Francisco. There we had two dates at the same time. While a couple of us had the honor to meet Peter Thiel, one of the early investors in facebook, the others hung out with Dale J. Stephens, the co-founder of Uncollege. Uncollege is a non-profit-organization, which goal it is to establish alternative ways of education. Dale told us that he dropped out of college because he was so frustrated about the huge gap between theory and practice. He also thought that schools wouldn’t prepare you for real life since you don’t have to worry about food and laundry when you live on campus. To support the idea of Uncollege he is writing on a book right now which shall teach you how to have a good education without going to an educational institution. Dale was rewarded with $100.000 for his project by the Thiel Fellowship. Message of the session: “Don’t ask what you want to do in your life, ask what you want to do right now!”

The rest of the group met together with some EBS NINE fellows with Peter Thiel at his office in San Francisco. He gave us a full hour with him, telling us how and it what kind of ventures he invests and discussion how to foster entrepreneurship in Europe. One of his most inspiring sentences during that hour was: “Most people give up on their dreams too eraly” saying that a lot of people don’t trust themselves to start their own business or idea but rather give up.

After the group had reunited, we had an inspiring conversation with Ben Mappen, the founder of LeanLaunchLab. By this software Ben wants to make it easier for investors and entrepreneurs to communicate. Even though he is the only founder, he didn’t come up with the idea for LeanLaunchLab. Steve Blank, a retired Stanford professor for entrepreneurship, had invited him to talk about his former startup (www.techcofounders.com) but by the end of the dinner Steve had sold his idea to Ben which was the beginning of LeanLaunchLab. Concerning the Pioniergarage, he gave us the advice to not only raise awareness by talking about entrepreneurship but to actually found startups even though they might be doomed to fail.

At 6:30 p.m the Pioneers were invited to an event of Foodzie, that runs an online platform to sell local farmer products. Fresh apple juice, gourmet cheese, bourbon whiskey and more were promoted in a trendy atmosphere.

Tomorrow we’ll get to see Mozilla’s headquarters, meet Camilo Acosta from PayByGroup, David Porter from 8Tracks and Oliver Harnisch from German Silicon Valley Accelerator. At night we will host a barbecue at Blackbox Mansion to which we have invited all the people we met.
Stay tuned!!
